Vaping and tobacco use among youth

Vaping and tobacco use among youth today is very effective and has caused many lives to be lost. Four cases of severe lung injury in the Twin cities are linked to vaping and e-cigarette use. The Minnesota Department of Health made an official warning stating the harms of these products and advising doctors to be on the lookout.

A survey conducted by the Minnesota Youth Tobacco survey shows that 1 in 5 Minnesota high schoolers are vaping. E-cigarettes and vaping are not safe for youth. Nearly all of them contain nicotine. It is highly addictive and can harm the developing adolescent brain. The brain is still developing until the age of 25, so nicotine is especially harmful for youth and can disrupt attention and learning.

Let's discuss how we can prevent the youth in our community from risking their health by vaping/ tobacco use. Teens should have people they can talk to like a parent, friend, or even a teacher. They shouldn't have to cope by harming themselves.

Tobacco stores often use advertisements to attract young vulnerable customers. They convince them by saying vapes and e-cigarettes will give you a sense of relief, and will free your mind of stress. But all it does to you is make you more addicted, hence the nicotine.

We must educate and continue to spread awareness on this for the youth to have knowledge on the risks of tobacco and vaping.
